I’ve previously listed the LP candidates here, here, here and here. Now, George Donnelly has turned this list into its own website with graphics and continuous updating. George explains:

An Effort to List all LP Candidates

We Libertarians need to know how many candidates we’re fielding for office. Which states are fielding full slates? no slates? Who are the candidates, what do they look like, what is their history, what are their positions and motivations?

This is all very basic but, before Libertarian Party Candidates (LPC), you could not find all this information in one place.

It’s important to see how well (or poorly) we Libertarians are doing at challenging the Republicrat duopoly at the ballot box. Hopefully LPC will serve as a measuring stick and as an incentive to run more and better candidates in 2010, 2012 and beyond.

Background

When Paulie pointed out in July of 2008 that LP.org doesn’t list all the Libertarian Party candidates running for office, it piqued my interest. How can we expect people to support and vote for Libertarian candidates if they don’t even know who they are – or even that they exist?

So, after chatting with Paulie, I decided that Libertarians might like a website where they can find all LP candidates in one convenient place.

Thanks to Paulie, the state parties and others that have collected the raw information presented here. All I did was design the site and enter the data.

Future Years

The site was built in a hurry during my spare time in the last couple weeks of July 2008, but I plan to significantly improve it for 2010 and beyond. Your sugestions and comments will help make that a reality.

Please Share your Feedback

Please feel free to contact me, George Donnelly, at me@georgedonnelly.com with any suggestions, ideas, complaints or whatever. I’m open to developing the project in new directions. I’m also interested in other strategies to advance the cause of liberty.

According to the site, the LP is running

* 15 for US Senate
* 109 for US House
* 5 for State Governor
* 4 for State Lt. Governor
* 1 for State Treasurer
* 3 for State Attorney General
* 2 for State Auditor
* 22 for Other State Offices
* 42 for State Senates
* 216 for State Houses
* 3 for Local Executives
* 26 for Local Legislatures
* 6 for Judge
* 12 for Sherriff or Constable
* 78 for Other Local Offices
* 546 Total LP candidates

Press release posted on the LP Radicals yahoo group. Starchild has had various offices in the San Francisco and California LP, and is one of the spokespeople for this initiative.

The San Francisco Department of Elections announced today that the measure prohibiting city officials from spending money arresting and prosecuting people for prostitution, and mandating equal legal protection for sex workers, has qualified for the November ballot. Of 500 signatures randomly sampled and checked by department personnel, 80 percent were found to be valid. “This is a happy day for San Franciscans who want government to focus on fighting real crimes like homicides and robberies, and are tired of seeing resources wasted in a futile effort to police consensual sex between adults,” said Starchild, a sex worker activist and spokesperson for the campaign. “We’ve cleared the first hurdle.” By the Elections Department’s tally, supporters had turned in 12,745 signatures of registered San Francisco voters on July 7.

The campaign to decriminalize prostitution will hold a kickoff rally and press conference to formally announce the results on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in front of the Polk Street entrance of City Hall, with
speakers to likely include Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, who was a signer of the petition to put the measure on the ballot along with two of his board colleagues. “It is way past time that the
recommendations of the Board of Supervisors 1996 Prostitution Task Force were implemented,” said the measure’s proponent, Maxine Doogan. “Criminalizing sex workers has been putting workers at risk of violence and discrimination for far too long.”

The prostitution reform measure joins two other voter-submitted measures on the local Nov. 4 ballot, along with eight measures put on the ballot by the mayor or members of the Board of Supervisors, with many others expected to be added in the next several weeks.

Back in November, I made the following comments at
Loretta Nall Sends Troy King Appropriate Sex Toy
:

But reasonable people would not include the Alabama legislature, which in is great wisdom passed a law banning dildos, vibrators, and other weapons of mass stimulation.

Not content with the law as it stands, Alabama Attorney General Troy King wants the legislature to make the law even more draconian.

I remember Troy from college. He was always a little weird. He used to write frequent letters to the CW, which described in detail his disgust with homosexuals hooking up in public toilets (well before Larry Craig), a subject he seemed to be intimately familiar with, and exhorted readers to go eat at Cracker Barrel, which at the time was under fire for a policy of discriminating against having gay employees. Troy always seemed just a little too obsessed with homosexual perversion.

Alert readers may remember that Loretta Nall sent Troy King a blow up pig:

My suspicion now seems likely to have been confirmed.

Loretta explains

This is not about being gay. This is about being a hypocrite…of the highest order

There is an official denial of the rumor about Troy King now….so I can say what the rumor is.

According to rumors flying around for the last week Troy King, our
rabidly homophobic
, anti-sex toy, Sunday School teaching, pro-execution Republican Attorney General is GAY! And I don’t mean that as in happy either. I’d bet he is anything but happy right now. In fact, according to two sources he is about to resign. [..]

I have been sitting on this story for about a week. Truth is I am SORE from having to sit on it so long….but not as sore as Troy King is.

Loretta elaborates:

I have some friends in pretty high places in Alabama politics so I called one of them up with the juicy details. They told me they heard a rumor about his sexual orientation some six months ago from a former reporter with a large, credible newspaper in Alabama. I also know that reporter and knew them to be very credible. The rumor at the time was that Troy’s mystery man was his old college roommate who he gave a position to when he took over the AG office in 2004. Supposedly when Troy was out of town so was lover boy.

The story then became that the mystery man was a young man who had just graduated from Troy University and was the Homecoming King(no pun intended) (God that gets confusing…Troy King with the homecoming king who graduated from Troy) and that was who the wife walked in on. Then a few weeks later Troy and his boy toy from Troy were spotted at the YMCA (not kidding) engaging in….ummmm….inappropriate activities. Yeah…at the YMCA…made famous by the Village People. Apparently Troy has no inkling of what it means to be ‘discreet’.

I’m betting they are both true. If Troy King can be a closet gay and Alabama Attorney General at the same time then there exists in this universe the infinite possibility for him to be a promiscuous, closet gay, Alabama Attorney General. But apparently closet and promiscuous don’t go so well together. But, hell, no one is claiming that he’s smart are they?

As far as the significance of this story, Loretta explains:

There are so many things that make this a delicious story. Gay Sex, high ranking elected officials who are rabidly anti-gay in public but turn out to be gay in private, they get caught at the YMCA (of all places), the whole sex toy incident, the ‘below the belt’ legislation that Troy has made a focal point during his time in office, his desire to be the guy who injects death row inmates with deadly chemicals. I bet this is why he objects to DNA testing, ya know? Wonder where all they would find his DNA? It’s really not much different than what Bill Clinton did with Monica Lewenski…except Troy is a Republican and his mystery partner is GAY!! Lordy, does it get any better than this?

Head On Radio Network is one of several sites making video and musical parodies which take advantage of Troy King’s embarrassment.

Another one is found at the myspace page for Mock 5

Alabama Queen

Troy King has refused to comment on the allegations, claiming that his kids would be subject to teasing.

Cat holdupA robber in Texas came into a convenience store, pointed his gun at the clerk’s head and fired.

The clerk moved just in time to dodge the bullet, and emerged quickly from behind the counter with her own gun.

You go, girl!

A Longview clerk showed her mettle for the second time within a year Saturday, returning gunfire on an assailant as he fled a Fourth Street convenience store.“He cocked the gun to shoot (at) me again, and then I went barrel to barrel with him,” Robin Adams said in the EZ Food Mart where she and her store manager husband, Jimmy, returned to work Sunday. “This thing happened so fast that nothing was said about money. It was like he came in here to kill me.”

No one was injured in the shooting.

At 9:59 p.m. Saturday, Adams was ringing up orange juice and a cigarillo for a customer when man stepped rapidly in front of her register and raised a handgun, firing once.

“He’s shooting right at her face,” the manager said as he replayed an in-store video showing the man firing at his wife of 31 years. “She’s got powder burns on her face.”

The video shows the clerk bending slightly at the register when the gun was raised toward her. She stands up, moving her head reflexively to the left while lifting a .32-caliber pistol from a shelf just inches below the cash till.

“I’m just so happy I got lucky and tilted my head,” she said, estimating the bullet missed her skull by fewer than three inches. “And the only choice I had was to pull mine out.”

The clerk fired once on the fleeing man, striking a plastic glass partition. The assailant’s bullet had nicked the top of a pack of Winston Light 100s behind Adams’ head and continued through the store front glass.

You can read the entire article here.

This is why women need to be familiar with firearms, not fear firearms (well, you should fear them, but it should be a healthy fear so you don’t end up doing something stupid, and not a fear of using them in self-defense), know how to shoot so you don’t freeze if you need to use the gun (take lessons, for goodness’ sake), and have firearms available for use.

You never know when it’s going to be you, or the other guy. There are a lot of violent freaks out there, and you need to always be prepared to deal with them.

Duct Tape BanditOkay, nobody else touched this one, so I guess I will.

Kasey Kazee of Ashland, Kentucky tried to hold up a liquor store, with duct tape wrapped around his face as a disguise. (Wouldn’t masking tape work better for that purpose? Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

The store manager had some duct tape of his own, though, wrapped around a club he kept in the store for just this sort of occasion. He chased Kazee outside, and an employee held the would-be bandit in a neckhold until police arrived. EMTs removed the tape, though there doesn’t seem to be any footage of that process, unfortunately; apparently Kazee got lucky because he had been sweating so much that the tape didn’t stick well. Not surprisingly, he was quickly nicknamed “The Duct Tape Bandit”.

Hilarity ensued when, in an interview from the jail with a local television station, a very animated Kazee proclaimed “I’m not no Duct Tape Bandit”. This, you have to see to believe.

Not at all surprisingly, folks on YouTube have been having a ball. Some of them do reenactments. Another made a photoshop overlay proving that Kazee is indeed the Duct Tape Bandit (as if there was ever really a question about it) to the tune of “Photograph” by Nickelback (“look at this photograph, everytime I do it makes me laugh, how did our eyes get so red, and what the hell is on Joey’s head?”). Someone else made a fake news story about a copycat robber who wrapped his head in invisible scotch tape. One even made a very funny rap song using actual media interviews about the case, which can be heard and downloaded on zShare.

Most interestingly for our purposes, though, is that some people who actually live in Kentucky have said it won’t be long before the state enacts a law requiring a five-day waiting period and a background check for the purchase of duct tape. Also interesting is that, in a state where many are avid hunters, the store manager didn’t have a shotgun behind the counter instead of a club. Kasey Kazee really needs to be thankful he’s still alive.

So, what will happen to the Duct Tape Bandit? He faces 20 to life for robbery, and the judge and jury is likely to be unmoved though amused by his claim that they have the wrong man, given that he was caught on the scene with the duct tape still on his face. I smell an insanity defense.

Tesla all-electric automobileFrom ABC News:

It goes zero to 60 in about four seconds. Its top speed is 130 miles per hour. And it doesn’t use an ounce of gasoline.

It’s the Tesla Roadster, a new car that’s fueled entirely by electricity and could be hitting the lot just in time. Today the Energy Department reported that the average gallon of regular gasoline is now $3.10 — a new nominal record price for the United States.

The Tesla Roadster is named after Nicola Tesla, the largely forgotten genius inventor of alternating current electricity, and it’s the brainchild of Martin Eberhard, who said he designed it because he cares about the environment and because he wanted one for himself.

“It’s time for us to do something about our dependence on foreign oil,” Eberhard said. “It’s time for us to do something about global warming. But I wasn’t ready to go drive around some goofy little car. … Think of how electric cars look. All the ones you’ve ever thought of.”

There haven’t been many electric cars. Early automobiles ran on electricity, as did General Motor’s ill-fated and quickly abandoned EV1, which debuted in the 1990s and died soon thereafter. Eberhard said there’s “nothing beautiful” about the Prius, perhaps the best-known hybrid car. “It doesn’t do anything for me,” he said. “Think of it this way. A world of 100 percent hybrids is still 100 percent addicted to oil.”

Fight in the Alabama State Senate!

According to
Between the Links
:

Senator Charles Bishop (R-Arley) got a standing ovation for puching Senator Lowell Barron on the Senate floor. Mike Hubbard, the chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, was recognizing distinguished guests when he asked all state legislators to stand as a group to be recognized — there were too many in the audience to recognize individually.

After they all seated, however, he then specificially recognized Senator Charles Bishop “who has been much maligned by the press” recently, obviously a reference to the “Alabama Senate fight.” Applause erupted and people began to stand — a reaction only matched that night as US Senator John McCain approached the podium.

Dear Editor,

Jason stands for both individual and tribal sovereignty.

He believes that a truly free people can not take money and services from an occupying state and retain its independence and dignity at the same time.

He believes the flow of information, much like the people themselves, ought to be free.

He believes real qualifications, not titles, should matter most.

Virgil Vogel wrote in 1974 in a documentary history of the American Indian:
Montaigne, Rousseau, and Jefferson paid tribute to the Indian capacity to organize human affairs in a libertarian manner. The Iroquois developed a system of confederated government which, according to Benjamin Franklin, served as an example for his Albany Plan of Union, and eventually for the Articles of the Confederation.

Could I get you guys to write a “LTE” on my behalf? We are coming up on 1 month until the election and the more LTE’s I can get published, the better. I’m in a unique situation in that our tribe members are basically spread out over a 10 county/ 2 state area, which makes your typical style of campaigning tough. Thats why I’m hoping LTE’s will reach those I’m unable to visit or those who are unable to check out my campaign site.

The LTE info can be found at http://www.mujaji.net/pokagon/involved.html

Pick any of the publications listed. It would be a great help to me and I would return the favor 10 fold in the future.

Jason GattiesI thought this was just entirely too cool. Jason Gatties, a Libertarian activist in Michigan who comments regularly on LFV, has decided to run for the Pokagon Tribal Council. For those who might be unaware, Native American tribes are sovereign nations, with their own laws and their own government, which makes this even more interesting than the average Libertarian campaign. What follows is the announcement from his blog.

I’m Full Of Suprises

Those who are close to me understood that I had plans on running for public office in 2008, but for now atleast, those plans are on the back burner. This past weekend I realized that Tribal elections were coming up in July. After speaking with my wife and others who are close to me, I was encouraged to run for a seat on the Pokagon Tribal Council.

I am a member of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, which is located in Southwest Michigan/Northern Indiana. We have over 3,000 members and this summer, we are opening the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, Mi. I feel that I can bring my libertarian values to our tribal government. If you really think about it, most Native Americans are probably “libertarians” even if they don’t realize it. I plan to educate our tribe and prove to everyone that libertarianism can work in any form of government.

In the next day or so, you should be able to access VoteGatties.org and get more info on how you can help. I will NOT seek any donations, but you can certainly help me out in other ways. The website that was being worked on for the 2008 campaign is, much like the campaign itself, on the back burner for now. The tribal campaign site is very basic. Given the fact that the election is on July 14th, I didn’t have a lot of time to design a proper campaign site, but I feel it will still accomplish my goals. To the best of my knowledge, I am the only person running for Tribal Council who will even have a web presence, so that alone I feel will give me an edge.

I wouldn’t run for office if I didn’t have my concerns. They include:

1.Term Limits- Currently there are no term limits for the Tribal Council or any elected tribal board or commission. I feel term limits are important and if elected, I will propose a constitutional amendment requiring some form of term limits for Tribal Government.

2. 26% of our tribe are unemployed and 40% of our tribe members live below the poverty line. One would think that would change with the opening of our casino in August. However, even though the casino has a “indian preference” when hiring for a position at the casino, the majority of the high paying jobs being offered are for those who have a college education, something which the majority of the tribe members do not have. I’m not in favor of any “hiring preference” when it comes to casino jobs, however, I believe that work experience should account for something and more jobs should be available to anyone, regardless if you have a college degree. I mean, do you really need a college degree to open a door or unclog a toliet?

3. Privitization- I believe the tribal council overpays for certain jobs that could be outsourced outside the tribe, saving tribal funds and allowing more tribal profits to be shared amongst it’s members.

4.No More State Funding- Currently the bulk of funds given to our tribe is in the form of state and federal grants. Thats fine, except for the fact that these funds come from the pockets of taxpayers who are not members of the tribe. How can we truly become a “sovereign nation” when we depend on tax dollars from non-tribal members? We are opening a casino (which is privately funded) which will generate MILLIONS for the tribe, not to mention the various stores which will open up on tribal land. If managed correctly, the tribe should become pretty self-sufficient in a short amount of time. I want to make it my JOB to make sure our tribe truly becomes a sovereign nation.

5.Stick to the constitution!!! Right now our tribal constitution reads like a “libertarian dream” and it should remain that way. As our tribe grows stronger, the temptation will be to turn our tribal government into a minature version of the U.S. Government. We can not allow this to happen. Through time, we as American Citizens have had many of our freedoms stomped upon by the government at all levels. As a citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, I feel it is critical to stick to the constitution that was drawn back in the mid 90’s. We can not allow our tribal leaders to infringe on the freedoms promised in our constitution. As a council member, I will make sure this does not happen.

These are just a few of the many issues I plan to campaign on. I could go on and on, but if I did that, I would have nothing to blog about tomorrow!

Be sure to bookmark this blog for all the latest campaign information and be sure to bookmark VoteGatties.org, as that site will be live by the end of the week. If elected, I will NOT run for office in 2008 as I plan to give my full attention to the Tribal Council for the next 3 years. Given the fact that I have many family & friends who are tribe members, this is a great opportunity for me to not only get elected, but make a real difference.

I found this over on Stupid Evil Bastard, and was pretty amazed by it.

When Rubik’s Cube first came out, I was a teenager (yeah, I know, I’m showing my age with this story, LOL). I bought one with my own money, which I had worked like a dog to earn (back then, I think I was making about $1.75 an hour, again showing my age) and took it home. Basically, I intended to mess with it a bit, to get the feel for it, before I actually mixed it all up to be solved.

My older brother “solved” that problem for me, by asking “hey, can I see that?” then immediately mixing it all up while cackling gleefully.

Guess I’ve never forgiven him for that. I basically never touched the damn thing again.

But this kid is pretty doggone amazing, I have to say, and the way he studies it before attempting to solve it suggests maybe I had planned to go about it the right way after all. Apparently this is the world record for solving a Rubik’s Cube: 17.9 seconds!

National Okay, I know a lot of people make their living by doing telemarketing. Even my own son did it for a while (although he absolutely hated it). It’s an honest living, as long as they aren’t doing telemarketing for a scam. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t annoy me, though. My phone number has always been unlisted and unpublished. I put all my phones on the no-call list, including my cell, to no avail. I finally just got rid of my home phone, because they were driving me crazy.

So you can imagine my amusement when I ran across a recording wherein someone probably scared some poor “you have just qualified for a free….” telemarketer out of the industry forever. I have to laugh every time I hear it.

While meandering around google just a few minutes ago, I found what appears to be a brand-new blog for the 2008 presidential election. It’s surprisingly well thought out, and seems to be trying to maintain a neutral viewpoint. There’s not even a hint of what party affiliation or political persuasion this blogger may have, which is what peaked my interest.

Here’s their blog description:

The purpose of this blog is to provide voters with a comprehensive list of candidates and their positions, and also to provide voters and candidates alike with a forum in which to share their views. Commentary is not only welcome, but highly encouraged.

Unlike some other presidential election blogs, this one is extremely comprehensive so far, with a listing of (and links for) about 75 presidential candidates of every imaginable description. They even listed the candidate for the “Vampires, Witches and Pagans Party”, LOL.

They’ve definitely put some work into it, and given it a lot of thought. The candidate and party links list alone is impressive compared to most blogs of that nature.

Apparently they’re looking for input to make sure they’ve included all the candidates and parties which should be listed, and are also looking for input so they can compile biographical info on all the candidates. They are also looking for additional links to add. So far their link categories seem to be candidates (separated by party), political parties, discussion resources, and general resources.

If anybody’s interested in checking it out or saying howdy, the blog address is www.08presidentialelection.blogspot.com

Anyone wanting to help with printing (and help is needed! sooner better than later!) can just go to www.paypal.com and use Susan’s email address to send money to: hogarth@gmail.com

Regarding printing and distributing these, Susan says:

By the way, I have no problems with anyone using any of these in any form, modifying them, whatever. No credit neccessary. But PLEASE ask me for the source files. I did the layout in an excellent open source program called Scribus, but can provide the idles as EPS and other formats.

I suggest those looking into working on layout and design look into Scribus.

Over at Ground Up Libs Andy mentioned and idea he had which we have been kicking around for years to make a flier to distribute at antiwar rallies and April 15th demonstrations about how taxes fund the war machine.

This time, Susan Hogarth of LP Radicals picked up on the idea and come up with a cool flyer that we are hoping to actually print and distribute. This is her second edit and there might be more changes coming.

Your ideas, as always, are welcome on any changes that could improve the flyer.

You can use this file with added contact information for your LP local group or campaign, but Susan asks that you contact her for the source files to alter the file, rather than editing the .jpg, and she will be making it available in a variety of formats.

She is also trying to raise a couple of hundred dollars for a print run.
