I was told that Bill Redpath got both sides of the story before issuing the check.
This was a big controversy back when it happened, with allegations of voters tricked into registering Libertarian, and false SS numbers on forms.
However, I have so far been unable to find any trace of the story on the web.
I can’t beleive the LNC paid Fincher after what he did to New Mexico. I’ll damn sure not waste any more money on the national LP.
Mr. Knight is the one that screwed up that New Mexico drive, by wasting scarce party funds to funnel to an incompetent (obviously) STATIST, anti-libertarian “private investigator” that actually PROVED we did everything above-board. I also have a video (which I’ll post here soon) that shows us doing the job correctly. Mr. Redpath did the honorable thing by paying me, albeit my wife/business partner has passed away, in part due to the stress inflicted needlessly by Mr. Knight all those years ago. Mr. Redpath got both sides of the story, and found Mr. Fincher to be more credible than Mr. Knight, period. The work was performed, and performed honorably. Now, Mr. Knight should do the honorable thing and pay Mr. Fincher the INTEREST on that $679, out of his own pocket. Come on now, be honorable and pony up, Mr. Knight.
This is from the “private investigator’s” report, from the county elections coordinator himself, who we pitched. Does this sound like we tricked him into registering Libertarian? This report proved my case, to those actually bright enough to read it and understand what it actually said:
Interview:
Robert Lucero
Bureau Of Elections Coordinator
Bernalillo County
505-768-4104
Mr Lucero stated that he had personally gone to the sight where the Finchers were registering voters and posed as a potential registrant.
Mr Lucero stated that he had asked the Finchers many questions concerning their efforts and received many answers he considered in violation of the election code.
Mr Lucero stated that he asked if they were only signing up “Libertarians” or could he sign up as a “Republican” to which he stated that Mr Fincher told him “that would defeat their purpose.”
Mr Lucero stated that he had contacted the District Attorneys office concerning possible violations of the Election Code and that they would be doing an investigation also.
Mr Lucero furnished me with (2) letters written in reference to the situation and they are included in this report.
Mr Lucero seemed a little hesitant to discuss an ongoing investigation with this investigator but did say that he had heard that they were ” also having problems with the Libertarian Party registration in Las Cruces.”

Mr. Knight is the one that screwed up that New Mexico drive, by wasting scarce party funds to funnel to an incompetent (obviously) STATIST, anti-libertarian “private investigator” that actually PROVED we did everything above-board.”
Why was a private investigator hired? It seems to me that it wouldn’t have taken a Dick Tracey or Sherlock Homles to figure this one out. Couldn’t just about anybody have conducted this investigation? How much money was spent on the private investigator?
There wasn’t enough drama mucking about, glad to see that got taken care of.
LPNM hired the private investigator – who we hoped would give us some ammo to fight all the media allegations with. He is a man I’ve know nearly 50 years and is known to me to be a man of integrity. Unfortunately, he substantiated the allegations concerning voter fraud. He interviewd registrants selected at random from the forms Fincher turn in at Bernalillo County and the only one who didn’t claim to be tricked was a homeless man who was paid a few bucks to register. Hundreds and hudreds of Fincher registrants subsequently un-registered.
With regard to the Social Security numbers, Ron Crickenberger [RIP] came to New Mexico and examined the registration forms with the bogus numbers in the Secretary of State’s office. He reported to me a few days later at our state convention that he observed numerous ssns in the same handwriting which he believed to be Finchers. I assume he gave the same reporrt to Dasbach and others at LPHQ at the time. This is after I told Gary we could only pay for registrations that the SOS actually counted – he had been encouraging people to leave their ssns off the form so he could make an issue of it.
We went through an extended state-wide news media nightmare because of what Fincher did. I think you had to be here to apprciate the damage done.
The “private investigator” report substantiated the fact that we were NOT tricking any voters, and no voters were tricked, as the county elections coordinator (see above) and then-state chairman Ron Bjornstad verified. As for what the voters (allegedly) said (this is specious at best due to the background of the so-called P.I. (former cop & judge, ’nuff said) and anyone can get anything with the right leading questions. The one who actually CAME TO our site (county elections coordinator Lucero) could not be led, ergo his account that we were insisting on registering people to vote Libertarian.
The contention that I encouraged anyone to leave off their SSNs on the form so that I “could make an issue of it” is pure fantasy, and indicative of the honesty/honor level Mr. Knight has generally displayed during his activism career. This is NOT what happened.
Therefore, any damage that actually occurred was the result of Mr. Knight’s ineptitude, a la wasting party funds to ask leading questions to voters to effect an intended outcome. If Mr. Knight had left well enough alone and not included a P.I. in the mix, the brouhaha would have blown over a heck of a lot quicker.
Anyone should feel free to ask Mr. Bjornstad or, for that matter, Mr. Lucero, again, as to what actually was witnessed as to our forthright pitch to registrants.
As for the “extended state-wide news media nightmare”, keep in mind that I know all too well about that: I was a victim of their smearing. Good reputations of my wife and me got tarnished for no good reason.
And sadly, I see no remorse on the part of Mr. Knight for this media rape.
“The ‘private investigator’ report substantiated the fact that we were NOT tricking any voters, and no voters were tricked, as the county elections coordinator (see above) and then-state chairman Ron Bjornstad verified.”
What exactly did then-state chairman Ron Bjornstad verify and how did he go about making this verification?
Why does the Libertarian Party continue to hire slime like Gary Fincher? Why do they pay him on signatures he falsified by writing in fake ss #s? Why do they continue to hire him when he beats up on a young girl in the parking lot during a ballot drive and then runs away from the police after the manager of a MacDonalds calls 911? I’ve told everyone how he threatened to torture and kill my dog Heidi who never hurt anyone and how he abandoned his wife when he felt he couldn’t use her anymore and never paid his 1st wife child support based on his idea of libertarian principles. Gary Fincher is a psychopath plain and simple and the people who paid him should know that by now. Maybe they paid him for fear of what he might do to them if they did not give him what he wanted. If torturing animals, beating up on young girls, abandoning your wife, and refusing to support your children and falsifying records is what it means to be a libertarian then maybe I’m not a libertarian. Why would anyone in their right mind give him that check?
I apologize, folks – I was under the impression that my starting the commentary on this thread would get the ball rolling on some provocative, engaging and thoughtful dialogue on a serious internal party issue.
(Sigh) I guess these political discussion forums also have as their byproduct of bringing out some of the more weird/bizzarre elements as well.

Hmmmmm, I wonder what the juicey details are with these allegations…
former LPNM state chair Ron Bjornstad actually came to our site and, in stealth, witnessed us getting voters to register Libertarian at a K-mart in Albuquerque. Let’s watch:
Wow, those are some hellacious allegations against Fincher. Does anybody know whether there’s any truth in them? It strikes me as very odd that a grown man allegedly beat up on a young girl in a public place, but was not arrested for it. Does anybody have a link where we can read further on this guy’s allegations, since he states he has “told everyone”?
Wow, after watching this video it looks like Mr. Knight owes Mr. Fincher an apology, at least when it comes to the charge of tricking voters.
Now be nice Mr. Knight!:)
Roger is well known for exagerating, to put it mildly.
Well, calm down, folks.
You know, I didn’t want to have to get into all this and dignify this insanity with a response, but it seems that there are rational folks on here who seem to want to know, so I’m just gonna set the record straight and then not gonna address it any more.
You have to consider the source, and consider the context here, when you consider that Mr. Pope & I were friends for many years and had a falling out about a year and a half ago. Since, he’s been behaving more like a jilted lover (we’re both striaight though, so no gay jokes please) than a mature adult moving on with his life.
Obviously, Mr. Pope knows a lot of things about my life & history. I don’t think personal dirty laundry should be aired on these political discussion groups, so I’ll be as concise as I can here.
Mr. Pope and I were teamed up on the 2004 LP ballot drives with a 20 yr old woman from Indiana. The three of us working together had bad dynamics, and turned out to be sort of dysfunctional. This woman did a lot of screaming and yelling, getting red in the face when she didn’t get her way, and as a result, she and I would get into a few inevitable loud verbal arguments. But there was no physical violence, and certainly no incident in which the police were called. In a Burger King parking lot in Maine, the manager asked us to leave the property after hearing our arguing, so that’s where the exaggerations pauliecannoli is referring to come in.
Mr. Pope knows full well that my wife left ME, not the other way around. On principle, I refused to pay the state any ransom (since it was not my idea to have my child kidnapped unilaterally by my first wife); instead, I chose to address the problem individually, in the libertarian fashion, and funnel money & material goods directly to my child whenever I had that opportunity. I even have audio of my second wife complaining over my directing too much of our earnings to my teenage daughter. (Does anyone want to hear that audio?)
No one wants to torture and kill anyone’s dog, and SSNs aren’t supposed to be, legally, used as a prerequisite for being eligible to express oneself at the ballot box. I think both Mr. Pope *and* Mr. Knight should know that.
That should be enough of these personal assaults on here, shouldn’t it?

Jerry! Jerry! Jerry! Or perhaps I should say Paulie! Paulie! Paulie!
OK then, I’ll be Jerry. But only if I get to schtump Jaime Pressly. Anyway. Where’s Officer Steve?
I, not Ron Bjornstad, was state chairman during the Fincher Voter registration scandal. I received hate mail from voters registered by the Finchers for years afterwards.
The number of voters claiming they were tricked are in the hundreds. The eveidence is overwhelming, not the least of which was the investigator’s report, which I stand by.
Believe what you will – there are still people who deny the holocaust too.
Anybody who really thinks this video was “stealth” instead of staged, please contact me ASAP about a deal on some Florida real estate.
I’ve watched another half hour of video from which that segment was pulled. It appears genuine, or else Gary must have paid a hell of a lot of actors. I don’t think he can afford to do that.
Also, I’ve registered well over a hundred voters a day for a political party (including a third party) many, many times. My high was over 250, and a girl working with me that day got about 350-400. It’s not that hard.
As for Florida real estate, I have a relative in the business. He has some deals that are just too good to refuse.
No, Mr. Knight, the evidence is NOT “overwhelming” that we did any tricking of voters. Why are you totally disregarding the testimony from the ONE interviewee that could NOT be led into questioning, county elections coordinator Robert Lucero? This testimony reflects accurately the way we did our pitch. Call it illegal if you want that we did too much of a “hard sell” in trying to convince people to register Libertarian but as I saw it, that was our job, to get only Libertarian registrations, and not Republican and Democrat, as Mr. Pearson would have preferred we get in the mix.
I have never appreciated being accused of something that I did not in fact do. I didn’t appreciate a slippery so-called P.I. gettng answers that he wanted by asking leading Bjornstad, who were there with us, corroborated this, and even Mr. Dasbach and Mr. Crickenberger thought that the “tricking” allegations were BS. And ultimately, so did Mr. Redpath.
I think, with my finally receiving the long overdue pay for that drive, the case can now be closed.
BTW, the video is real, and was taken on or about Dec, 30, 1999, while we worked an Albuquerque K-mart and Wal Mart.
I also stand corrected that Mr. Knight, and not Mr. Bjornstad, was state chair during that time; I misspoke.
“Mr Lucero seemed a little hesitant to discuss an ongoing investigation with this investigator but did say that he had heard that they were ” also having problems with the Libertarian Party registration in Las Cruces.”
Mr. Knight has never given a satisfactory answer as to what happened with the similar allegations in Las Cruces, and as to why the P.I. focused on registrations in Albuquerque, and not at all in Las Cruces.
We didn’t work in Las Cruces.
Okay, guys. I don’t live in NM and do not know any of the particulars in this case. I have no opinion on it because I do not know any details. The first video, put up by pauliecannoli, is so brief that there is no context at all.
With all due respect to those involved, why is this being discussed on LFV? It seems an internal matter from 7 years ago, if the comments are anything to go by. I do NOT care about the sordid details, but just do not know why this whole mess is on display. Why now ?
As someone from New York, a libertarian for over 20 years who has only for the briefest time been involved in LP affairs, and that for a VERY short time (back in ’94) I just don’t get it.
Tom, I have also circulated LP petitions in New York, three different election years.
It’s up because Gary just now got paid, and I have been asked to post it in a public place. It was also a big controversy at the time.
If it does not interest you, there are plenty of other threads (400+ others in fact) to choose from. Take your pick.
Apparently it does interest some people as there are now about 30 comments.
All right paulie, I think I understand better now. At least partially.
That’s all well and good. But I still want to know where Officer Steve is.
To All:
What we are seeing is a lot of ” he said, she said” and muckraking.
I will state what I know.
I did NOT personally witness any of the petition activities of Mr. Fincher being discussed.
I don’t personally know Mr. Fincher, so I can not comment on his character.
But I do know Joseph Knight.
Mr. Knight does everything in his power to promote the Libertarian Party, and has done so for many years. I have never known him to act in any manner to hurt the Party.
I do know that the situation being discussed became a media “item”, and resulted in bad press for the Libertarian Party, which Mr. Knight and the State Central Committee had to respond to and contain with minimal resources.
And finally, I know that I hoped to forget this event, if possible, and never hear of it again.
Actually, my wife and I were keenly aware of the fight the State of New Mexico picked with us Libertarians, and were trying to everything in OUR power to fight back, contain and ameliorate the situation (given our constraints of being out-of-staters). Instead of fighting the State with all his fury, Mr. Knight chose to go after his fellow Libertarians, so it’s still true that he HAS done something to hurt individual Libertarians.
My wife and I did not ask for this fight, and we were bending over backwards to try to see that the drive was successful. In other words, the last thing we wanted was for the drive to be unsuccessful.
As for damage control/containment, we actually offered to take one very important step in that direction, which was march down to KOB-TV studios and sit down with the news department and set the record straight, and let them see that we were cooperative and not heinous criminals. However, Mr. Knight ACTUALLY DISCOURAGED US FROM DOING SO, a move that speaks volumes to me to this day as to his motivations at the time for REALLY wishing to ameliorate the situation. Later, he editorialized as to why we didn’t make ourselves available to the press to try to show cooperation!
Also, spending $750 of scarce party funds on hiring a private investigator, when it was not necessary to do so (Mr. Bjornstad had already vouched for the integrity of our pitch to voters), can be construed as something that hurt the party. Had the roles been reversed, I would not have authorized party funds to “investigate” Mr. Knight; instead, I would have given a fellow Libertarian the benefit of the doubt in the face of a dirty, vindictive, fraudulent State – and fought them with all the resources at my disposal…including that $750. Since when do you NOT give fellow Libertarians the benefit of any doubt, and instead side with the State rather than fight them, when they are out to destroy the party?
“Also, spending $750 of scarce party funds on hiring a private investigator, when it was not necessary to do so (Mr. Bjornstad had already vouched for the integrity of our pitch to voters), can be construed as something that hurt the party. Why did Mr. Knight spend $750 of party money to hire a private investigator? This was not a very difficult investigation to do. I’d be willing to bet that almost anyone could have done it as it didn’t require any special skill. If Mr. Knight had wanted to investigate the Fincher’s couldn’t he have done it without spending $750? What was wrong with the investigation done by Mr. Bjornstad
Andy, we had a ton of info posted about this on our web site for years (no longer available because we have a new webmaster) that would have given you more perspective. Hardcopy of some of that info was sent to some folks who I know visit here so maybe somebody will step up to verify what I’m saying. To answer your questions:
I did not spend the money arbitrarily – our central committee appropriated the funds. We wanted sombody with credibility, not a member of the party, to find out what happened, and that’s what we got.
Ron Bjornstad was assigned to see that the Finchers’ side of the story got told – a job he did well because he actually beleived in the Finchers’ side of the story. However, NOBODY else on our CenCom at the time did, especially after we got our own invesigator’s report.
There was actually one faction that was down on me because they wanted me to go after the Finchers legally, but we had bigger fish to fry – we were fighting for our very existence and trying to salvage our drive for major-party status. The State was using the Finchers as an excuse to challenge ALL new Libertarian registrations. We went to court and in a rare victory, the court ruled that the state had to accept all voter registrations unless there was a specific reason to believe a specific registration was faulty. By that time we had already lost hundreds and hundreds of the people registered by the Finchers.
Despite what Fincher claims, we asked him to come back to New Mexico and face these charges but he refused.
“I did not spend the money arbitrarily – our central committee appropriated the funds. We wanted sombody with credibility, not a member of the party, to find out what happened, and that’s what we got.”
No, that’s NOT what you got, as evidenced by all the erroneous stuff on the report, aside from Mr. Lucero’s claim. If Mr. Pearson had been a credible and/or conscientious invesitator, he would have done a REAL investigation, i.e., visited our work location and watched in stealth as we worked. This would have avoided a lot of heartache on a lot of folks. But that’s presupposing that not only he be credible and conscientious, but also honest, which he obviously wasn’t. Why the delusional Knight chooses to believe hearsay over the people who were actually present and watched us work defies credence. Mr. Knight, how come NO ONE that witnessed us work – not Mr. Bjornstad, not Mr. Lucero, not Mr. Morrison, not Ms. Graham, EVER even came CLOSE to even IMPLYING that we tricked anyone? The answer is because we didn’t. It’s amazing how many times you have to be demonstrated that, without “getting it”.
“Despite what Fincher claims, we asked him to come back to New Mexico and face these charges but he refused.”
I was actually in the throes of a medical crisis in Indiana when asked to return to New Mexico and do something which I already offered to do while in the state (but was discouraged by Mr. Knight)…and Mr. Knight knows this. Thus characterizing it as a “refusal” to come [back] to New Mexico is not exactly being forthright and honest. So, who’s being misleading here? I don’t like liars and have little tolerance for them.
“There was actually one faction that was down on me because they wanted me to go after the Finchers legally,”
LMAO, go after us for WHAT? Actually, if anyone should have been “gone after” legally, it should have been Mr. Pearson, for slander, and defamation of character, with Mr. Knight as an accomplice.
On the other hand, we didn’t break any laws, even by fiat governmental standards. Had there been any evidence at all, even one shred, you can damn well bet we would have been charged with probably an array of things. What Mr. Knight does not understand is that the proof is in the pudding: the fact that the State did not even file one single charge against us was no accident, and was a result of that they had nothing on us. The tricking allegations were politically motivated, a smokescreen, but had no legal basis. Does Mr. Knight think that the State of New Mexico, the same state that arrested us for trying to peacefully vote at a polling place, just decided to be “benevolent” to us this one time and give us a pass and not charge us out of the kindness of their heart? Of course not. That’s absurd. The State, even if Mr. Knight doesn’t, understands that we didn’t in fact engage in anything deceptive. We did our jobs, and look at the thanks we got from our supposed compadres for it!
Sick.
As for what paulie said about my exagerations, there are lies and there are exagerations, and there is a lot more to tell about Garys character. What is paulie’s name? There are those who question my character. I hate to admit it after all my exaggerations, but it was I, not Gary, who pushed Crystal down and kicked her relentlessly until the police arrived. Does anyone else believe that torturing of animals is ok? Anyway poor Kay told me she tried to console Gary after being accused of falsifying the documents that belonged to them. Please don’t force my hand, unless I run out of my medication. There is still Gary’s and paulie’s side of the story to tell but all I told is my side.
The police, and Big Brother, are watching my dog, and are watching Gary and U too, paulie. Because it’s a police state and I do my part to erect it; some things are so bad that the police state is justified.
Gary Fincher is capable of almost anything. I laughingly told him Crickenberger died and Gary was blamed for not agreeing. He is my master. Let’s twist the truth. Can anyone brag about torturing animals? My best friend Utahboy Larsen is now up on charges for child molestation! He prays for young girls and even tried to put a dick up his dead wife. My daughter’s friends were part of his dead wife’s menage a trois at the funeral home. Now apparently he has picked on paulie who won’t publish my autobiography, Mein Kampf. The libertarian party is going to be firing him? Is he a black male?
Pope, I told you a long time ago nt to contact me or address me ever again. In the real world, doing so anyway is considered stalking and harassment, and spreading known false statements is considered slander. Do you understand the repercussions of engaging in such activity? How much do you understand?
This Roger Pope is starting to sound more and more looney with each comment posted. Unbelievable.
This is a long post. It contains a long, somewhat philosophical investigation into the truth of the matter above. I generally side with Fincher above, although I disagree with him about many other things, and don’t particularly like him.
It is interesting that after all these years, most Libertarians still don’t understand what is necessary to place the LP on the ballot. I think it would greatly help the LP if that situation were rectified.
Every single controversy on this board is the result of a failure to comprehend the nature of political movement-building. Most of that failure is on Joe Knight’s part. Do I believe that Joe Knight is a well-meaning libertarian? Yes (to a point). Do I believe that he is even marginally aware of what constitutes a successful voter registration drive that doesn’t have the money to recruit ONLY actual libertarians? No, he has absolutely no conception of this, whatsoever.
If only people who placed into the “libertarian” quadrant of the Nolan chart were registered as “Libertarians”, it might be possible to register 1-10 per day, or 25-50 per day in a very libertarian area (perhaps a rural area where local famers were denied water rights by the federal government, and where was a highly-despised raid on an upstanding member of the community by the BATFE). So, most people Gary registered were in no way libertarian, or were only libertarian in a few small subject areas. This goes without saying for anyone who knows anything about the collective nature of political organization, and the US education system.
Gary’s pitch was something similar to this: “Hi pardon me, could you help me out with a quick registration to place the Libertarian Party on the ballot?” —response— “We need to collect a certain number of registrations in order to put the Libertarian Party back on the ballot.” —response—
Now then, understand this: Most people don’t care much about individual freedom. It is not the job of the voter-registrar to make mice into lions. It is the job of the voter registrar to get the mice to eat the cheese. In this analogy, the first is impossible, the latter is possible. It is the job of the LP registrar to save ballot access for the Libertarian Party by getting people to agree in public to be registered as Libertarian, –to fill out a registration form– in order to “help keep a third party choice on the ballot”.
Most people don’t register Libertarian because they were already philosophically libertarian, and just didn’t know the name of the party. Similarly, most people don’t register Libertarian because someone suddenly taught them the complete contents of Harry Browne’s “Why Government Doesn’t Work” or Hayek’s “The Road to Serfdom”.
Most people are “libertarian” on one or two issues. Some of these people are “single issue voters”, and will switch to Libertarian for the reason of advancing their “hot button issue” or “finding someone who seems nice who agrees with their hot-button issue”.
But —by far— most voters are convinced to fill out most of a voter registration form to allow another choice on the ballot for a few of the following reasons:
1) They don’t really like the major party choices, and they were asked to switch
2) They would like another choice on the ballot, and they were asked to switch
3) They are told that they can switch back after the election
4) They don’t care what they’re registered as, and they were asked to switch
5) They are told that they are a libertarian based on answers to general questions (and in fact, were they to be consistent, those answers would make them generally libertarian. Of course, many of these people are the people who want “less government” while still wanting a “war on (some) drugs”. In short, they are 100% philosophically-self-contradicting.) + they were asked to switch
6) A tiny minority of people hear what someone like Fincher or another voter registrar has to say, and they ask more detailed questions. They agree with ending the drug war, agree with legalizing machine guns, agree with the gold standard, etc… Then they say “I agree with everything you just said! Sign me up! I am a libertarian! Can I pay to join the party right here? Where do you guys have your townhall meetings?” These people really want what the LP is offering, and they switched gladly and with good knowledge of what they were doing.
Now then, #5 above allows for easily-manufacturable controversy.
You see, after some unphilosophical Reagan-voter registers as Libertarian, for reasons #1 and #2 and #5, he walks away thinking he did something good, but it wouldn’t take much to convince him otherwise, and create “buyer’s remorse”. And noone likes to blame themselves for “buyer’s remorse”! Better to blame the damned salesman!
Fincher had registered hundreds of such people, and this alarmed the authoritarian police state, because REGISTRATION NUMBERS TEND TO PRECEDE INCREASING VOTE TOTALS SINCE PEOPLE TEND TO VOTE 71% OF THE TIME WITH THE WAY THEY ARE REGISTERED.
This showed the NM police state that the Libertarians were engaging in effective political organization, OR, that they were _possibly_ engaging in effective political organization. In fact, if the Libertarians continued registering new members at the same rate, they could build a large movement by running into the actual philosophical libertarians (#6 above) and uniting them all together into a cohesive movement with thousands of passive members, and hundreds of active members. And, thinking that the NM LP might have the money to do that, the authoritarians in the NM division of elections decided to retaliate against them, before such numbers could be built up. (Voter registration is a winning political strategy, as is the counter-strategy of preventing it. This is evidenced by the state’s manipulation of Joe Knight against the electoral Libertarian movement. The police state is vastly, hugely, immensely more aware of viable political strategy than most Libertarians are. Knight made it easy for them to destroy the NM LP, in short because he “didn’t get the memo” from National. Knight seemingly thought that every person Fincher was registering fell into category #6 above. The National LP really needs to brief state chairs better, in the future, and eliminate the chance of conflict between the state parties and experienced political workers/manipulators.)
So, guess what happens when state workers (exclusively comprised of authoritarians in the major parties) call up people who registered Libertarian because they “believe in limited government” and “want another choice on the ballot”, and ask them “Did you really intend to join this political party that wants to legalize abortion and heroin?”
THEY ANSWER “NO”. THEY HAVE HEART ATTACKS. THEY SAY “I WAS TRICKED!” (Even though nothing could be further from the truth.) THEY CALL UP JOE KNIGHT AND CUSS HIS MOTHER’S NAME. And poor, poor Joe Knight has to listen to that, and be mentally strong enough to comprehend that he is the victim of an authoritarian hatchet job run by the state division of elections which is being manipulated by a few of the partisan hacks who work there. Moreover, he has to stand up for his ballot access worker, and point out that the major parties offer something grossly different than the generalities that they offer as well, and that anyone can be tricked into having “buyer’s remorse”. He has to state a few points mentioned in this article, and point out that every single person was told that they were “registering Libertarian”, or filling out a new “registration form”.
(The above all-caps portions are for the anti-strategy, “ivory-tower” Konkinist libertarians that George Washington would have had to put out of their misery, had they been enlisted to fight in the Revolutionary war on the side of the colonists. Some people simply don’t have the stomach for a war of ideas populated by the tragedy of the uninformed masses. For those people, resigning themselves to tyranny is a safer bet, since they also lack the courage to engage in violence against the state.)
Now then, had Joe Knight done his job prior to Fincher’s arrival, as if his freedom depended on it, Fincher could have been more detailed in his descriptions of Libertarianism, and been met with more than (most of) the blank stares he was met with. Had Knight kept the NM LP in the media, and challenged the drug war face-to-face, and been willing to walk door-to-door for libertarian candidates, the public might have known something about Libertarianism. Had this happened, the newly-registered “Libertarians” might not have been shocked when the nice young private investigator asked them in a gentle tone of voice (after scandalous front-page news stories along the calm and sedate lines of “LIBERTARIAN VOTER REGISTRARS SCAMMING PUBLIC!”): “Ma’am, do you think those people tricked you into registering Libertarian?”
It’s easy for someone who wants to be lied to (ie: A “Reagan Republican” supporter of “small government” who simultaneously “strongly believes in both property rights AND the drug war”.) to say “Yes, I was tricked by those terrible people.” In fact, given this situation, with a Democrat or Republican voter registrar, I could stand next to such a registrar and convince most people not to register with them, simply by raising doubts in their mind, EVEN IF THAT’S THE PARTY THEY INITIALLY SAID THEY WANTED TO BE REGISTERED WITH, AND WERE HAPPILY FILLING OUT THE FORM FOR.
For instance, I could say “This guy wants to put you in the Republican(Democratic) Party database, where you will stay for all time! They never take you out! In the future, if the Democrats(Republicans) create a dictatorship, they will be able to sieze all of your information!”
Another example: “The Democrats are in favor of abortion! Here in this county, they supported a measure to reduce prison sentences of people who sold drugs in school yards! Did you really mean to register as a Democrat, or did they trick you?” Etc…
The reason this is so easy, is because most US voters
do not have a consistent political philosophy of any kind. They have a grab-bag of self-contradictory opinions on individual issues that changes with the prevailing opinion.
So the state’s hatchet-men wanted to prevent the Libertarian Party from continuing to register large numbers of new Libertarians, because Gary and Kay had been shockingly effective.
Instead of defending Gary Fincher, and loving how effective he was, Joe Knight threw him to the wolves when the state turned up the pressure.
AND THIS HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE TIME THE LP DOES SOMETHING EFFECTIVE OR INTELLIGENT.
WHEN WE DO STUPID, POINTLESS, INEFFECTIVE THINGS, THE STATE IS FRIENDLY TO US, BECAUSE WE POSE NO THREAT TO THEM. IN FACT, OUR LOW SUPPORT LEVELS ENCOURAGE THE THOUGHT THAT FREEDOM IS IMPOTENT AT ORGANIZING AGAINST THE STATE. THIS IS WHY SAMUEL KONKIN WROTE THAT IT WAS “IMPOSSIBLE” FOR THE LP TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS, BECAUSE “THEY HAVEN’T DONE IT IN 30 YEARS”. (A circular argument.)
Do you see how this argument created self-fulfilling prophecy? Do you see how Gary Fincher –at that time– was one of the best tools the LP had at its disposal? Gary represented another day of LIFE for the NM LP. Instead of defending him, the NM LP threw him to the wolves. Instead of even partly-defending him, they chose to rip him off, and attempt to withold payment from him.
And the worst trick of all that they played on him: Telling him when he arrived that SSNs were “optional” and then reversing that decision halfway through, and claiming that they wouldn’t pay him for any forms that didn’t have the SSNs on them.
That was FRAUD. Moreover, it is fraud perpetrated against a traveling LP activist, who made so little money that he could not fulfill his basic financial obligations. As the major parties have paid hundreds of thousands to their activists, and the LP has paid vastly larger sums to Scott Kohlhaas, “the man who cannot be fired for any infraction, no matter how large”, Fincher and his wife (who had cancer at the time) were forced to go hungry!
And let’s say that this wasn’t true (it is true, but let’s say I was wrong, and only the public perception of what I said was true): it would legitimize leftist claims that the LP is comprised mostly of rich assholes who don’t care about the poor, not even the poor who dedicatedly support their agenda. (A huge incentive to not get involved!: after all, unless you’re also rich, a party willing to throw its workers to the state for punishment is something to avoid like the plague). And this was the implicit message to come out of the Newspaper headlines about Gary Fincher and the NM LP: “Don’t get involved, these people are scam artists!” (Or, if they’re not scam artists, don’t get involved, because they’ll hand you over to the state if you believe in freedom enough to work for them, …just like the Militia of Montana.)”
I personally believe that Joe Knight is a Konkinist. (He has commented on message boards populated by the toxic do-nothing, naive, “pro-violent-rebellion-replacement-of-elections”, philosophy of Konkinism.) Samuel Konkin was a libertarian anarchist who believed that all libertarians should oppose participation in electoral politics out of principle. (As opposed to an incrementalist libertarian anarchist like Murray N. Rothbard, who destroyed Konkin’s arguments, and argued that libertarians should participate in elections.) If this is true, and Knight was/is a Konkinist, then Joe was likely acting purposefully to destroy the NM LP at the time of this controversy. Konkin stated that he himself was “the worst enemy the Libertarian Party ever had”. I somewhat agree, even though I support the theory of counter-system-economics, and a few of his other ideas, I disagree that they necessarily must exclude elections.
The fact that Gary Fincher was defrauded by the LP NM’s actions was and remains a disgusting black eye on the face of The Libertarian Party.
In Joe Knight’s partial defense: I think Gary Fincher is a moocher. I personally don’t like being around him. He always needs something and he plays on people’s sympathy to get it. (That’s part of what made him a good petitioner. He is highly-in tune with people’s sympathies.) He also borrowed $8,000+ (motels, travel, car repairs) from Andy Jacobs when he was blacklisted by the LP (2007-2010), and now states that he has no intention of returning the money because of a dispute with Andy that has ended their friendship.
He’s an easy person to mistrust, especially when he’s trying to get something out of you by playing on your sympathies.
…But that’s not relevant to this story. This story above stands on its own. The facts of the time exonerate Fincher (in this case). This story is a great example of the fact that there are no checks or balances preventing the National LP from destroying the reputations of people who have worked for it seasonally for several election cycles. And, if the LP destroys the careers of the people who work for it, those workers are incentivized to take their skills to other opportunities, which lays them open to repeating their mistakes.
Would Fincher have developed such bad personality traits, and decided not to pay back Andy had he not been blacklisted in 2008 by Scott Kohlhaas and Kohlhaas’s underling (but titled “boss”, the naive “Political Director” Sean Haugh), with the help of Joe Knight? What if Fincher had not been abandoned by his political party?
I know more about this subject than most people do. A comma being off here or there doesn’t in any way effect the material practices and principles involved. …But only detailed questioning can reveal “most of the truth” (the “whole truth” is forever as hidden as internal motivations are hidden, and saboteurs never reveal their motives).
If the LP wants to grow and flourish, it will need to develop an intelligent protocol for dealing with its activist workers (petitioners and voter registrars). It will need to assume good conduct in the absence of contrary evidence. In fact, it should follow a “common law” protocol, replete with transparent jury trials that are documented, and open to appeal. If this opens us to statist scrutiny, then so be it: it has been proven necessary, since noone can currently get a fair hearing from the existing LP structure, and connected people have been elevated “above the law”.
This is especially true after regime changes.
We also shouldn’t assume that our party has successfully avoided infiltration.
These facts have not been gone over in an impartial way by the new chairman (I know this because neither I nor any of my friends have been contacted about it. This is not Mark Hinkle’s fault: he doesn’t know us very well). In fact, the institutional memory of the LP is so weak that it can’t properly even be said to exist. Where there should be documentation, there is “whispering in ears” (Most likely, whispering in ears by the people most likely to be tapping all of our phones). This makes us weak and open to attack from the D&R incumbent party.
And that assumes that the incumbent power structure can’t tap our phones at will, which I personally think is a foolhardy belief.
I really hope this post opens people’s eyes a little bit. Sure, I’ve left myself wide open to attack from the Konkinists here, because I’ve showed how ugly electoral politics is, and how many obstacles there are to overcome within it.
But what I didn’t mention, or mentioned only in passing, was that the alternative is violent rebellion against a powerful police state, which is a terrifying possibility. In fact, there is not a single serious person in the Libertarian Party who believes that bloody rebellion is a better thing than participating in elections. And if that doesn’t stop the Konkinist followers from bleating about “the violence inherent in the system” then, so be it. I don’t have time to repeat Rothbard’s arguments against Konkin here, but I generally agree with them.
