I found this over on Stupid Evil Bastard, and was pretty amazed by it.
When Rubik’s Cube first came out, I was a teenager (yeah, I know, I’m showing my age with this story, LOL). I bought one with my own money, which I had worked like a dog to earn (back then, I think I was making about $1.75 an hour, again showing my age) and took it home. Basically, I intended to mess with it a bit, to get the feel for it, before I actually mixed it all up to be solved.
My older brother “solved” that problem for me, by asking “hey, can I see that?” then immediately mixing it all up while cackling gleefully.
Guess I’ve never forgiven him for that. I basically never touched the damn thing again.
But this kid is pretty doggone amazing, I have to say, and the way he studies it before attempting to solve it suggests maybe I had planned to go about it the right way after all. Apparently this is the world record for solving a Rubik’s Cube: 17.9 seconds!

At the private high school where I used to teach, one of the faculty members taught a 2 week class every year on how to solve the Rubik’s Cube in under 1 minute. Just about every student who took the class could do it after 2 weeks.
I always wanted to sit in on that class, but was busy teaching my own on the engineering of medieval weapons and fortifications.
That’s awesome. I’m afraid that I wouldn’t be able to figure it out. That sounds like a cool class to take.

It sounds like that school had some really unique and interesting classes.
I would pay big bucks for a class on how to solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than a minute. That way, I could do it in front of my brother while yelling “In your face!”
Yeah, I really need to get over that particular 30-year-old sibling rivalry.
We had a two week session where we could teach whatever the hell we wanted and the students could sign up for whatever they wanted. There were some REALLY cool classes. My class built a 15 foot trebuchet and launched baseballs out on the field.
That’s just SICK!
Here are a few more impressive Rubik’s Cube feats:
