MLL poster: Stop the Draft!
Bush wants a larger military. The Selective Service System is busy testing its draft machinery.
Don’t wait for an official re-launch of the draft. Begin fighting it now. And if you find it useful, feel free to use this poster I’ve created for the Movement of the Libertarian Left. You’ll find a fullsize, downloadable PDF of the poster right here.

Actually, the Selective Service is scheduled to test its draft machinery … in 2009.
Repeat three times after me: The draft is not imminent. The draft is not imminent. The draft is not imminent.
There, feel better? If not, let’s examine the FACTS:
1) In order for the draft to be implemented, legislation would have to be passed by Congress (which defeated by a margin of something like 98%-2% last time it came up) and signed by the President (who has publicly said he’s opposed to it).
2) Even if such legislation passed, and even if the President signed it, it would take about 90 days for the Selective Service to begin implementing it if everything goes according to plan. Anyone ever heard of a government program going according to plan?
3) Part of the Selective Service System’s job is to be prepared to crank up if the above happens. That means they keep an eye on the legislative situation and act accordingly. The last thing I heard from my area training officer in Selective Service was “board training has been canceled for the foreseeable future.” If Selective Service thought there was a chance in hell that it was going to be called upon to implement a draft any time soon, they’d have their local boards undergoing refresher training and preparing to go into operation.
Obviously the prospect of conscription is something that needs to be kept track of (and as a Selective Service appointee, I feel a special obligation to keep track of it). And, when and where it’s brought up, it should be opposed with maximum effort. Hysteria, however, is not just silly, but damaging. Every time someone cries “wolf!” when there’s no damn wolf, a few more people stop paying attention and become less likely to respond NEXT time, when the wolf might actually be real.

Tom Knapp
LOL yeah, I knew that. I like the poster though.
Getting the list in your email? I’ve done Alabama-Texas so far.
